Captured and kidnapped from usually Africa, American slaves were branded once at their site of departure to show ownership as the slaves would mix while being transported to their site of sale, with this brand, specifically America. When they were sold, they would be branded with the new owner’s brand, and this would repeat with each resale. Specific slave owners like to brand in specific visible places, i.e. the forehead, the cheek, or the upper arm.
