Description:

Large 38 Star U.S. Flag from Fort Abraham Lincoln, Mandan, Dakota Territory. This 107″ x 51″ flag came with the oil painting of President Lincoln that hung in Fort Lincoln.

It is certainly of sufficient quality of manufacture, being of single weave wool bunting, with individually sewn cotton stars on both sides and stitched, folded-over stripes. Each star is 2 1/8″ in diameter.

It is probable that this flag was classified at Fort Lincoln as a field, storm or recruiting flag, as headquarters and post flags were larger. It is in fair condition, showing moderate wear and a few small holes and tears.

Research failed to identify the “T. Marston, Norton” lettered on the hoist. Possibly this was the name of one of the many vendors from whom the Government and the Army procured flags.
